CV

The experienced manager Michael Frieser (*1965) has been the Administrative Managing Director at Helmholtz Munich since March 2024. He aims to rapidly advance digitization throughout the entire research center and to future-proof the administration as a service provider.

As a PhD biologist and administrative specialist, he knows both sides of a scientific organization: the challenges of science administration and the needs of science. In the past, he has focused his work on modernization projects, such as the implementation of a document management system, and was thus one of the pioneers of digital transformation at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut. One of these projects was even awarded by the United Nations for particularly innovative and successful approaches to improving public service. Michael Frieser brings his many years of expertise in carrying out public construction projects, information technology, and classic topics such as budget and personnel management to the strategically important projects of the administration.

After completing his diploma in administrative management at the Federal University of Applied Administrative Sciences in Cologne, Michael Frieser worked for two years at the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community. This was followed by studying biology at the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, after which, from 1994 to 1996, he completed his PhD at the Department of Experimental Medicine at the University of Erlangen with a thesis on the endothelium, the innermost cell layer of blood vessels.

Following his PhD, he moved on to become the head of the Information Technology Unit at the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut in Langen, where he led the entire administration for 18 years after a series of responsible positions. Before becoming the Administrative Managing Director at Helmholtz Munich, Michael Frieser was the Administrative Director of the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH). Michael Frieser is married and has two children.
